Summary
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) - a student loan payment reimbursement program. You must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit your EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program Approval - award amount (up to $200 -000) & eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VHA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the EDRP application. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
Duties
- The Psychiatric Mental Health NP or Advanced practice provider (APP) functions in a clinical role to provide Veteran care and promote patientcentered interdisciplinary approaches to those individuals referred for Mental Health services at MVAHCS in accordance with standards of VHA and other accrediting bodies
- Duties for this position include - but are not limited to: Perform initial psychiatric comprehensive evaluations on new patients - collecting information of the chief complaint - as well as applicable additional information such as past psychiatric history - past substance abuse history - medical and family histories - psychosocial histories - and treatment histories
- When appropriate - a limited (most common) or complete (uncommon) physical examination should be completed as needed to complete the Nurse Practitioner's understanding of the patient's situation and needs
- Develop an initial treatment plan incorporating the appropriate level of expertise regarding psychiatric evaluation and treatment
- Manages ongoing treatment of follow-up patients - consulting with other psychiatric and medical consulting providers as appropriate - based upon the Nurse Practitioner's experience and delegation of duties
- Coordinates care for psychiatric patients - ordering appropriate diagnostic tests - performing patient education regarding the ongoing care of the Veteran's mental health needs - prescribing medications as appropriate
- Places orders for diagnostic tests and evaluates the test results or reports
- Coordinates clinic and provider schedules to maximize clinic efficiency and Veteran access to care
- Participates in the evaluation and treatment - as well as triaging of walk-in or add-on outpatients when this is needed
- Provides education and counseling to patients and families regarding preventative care - psychiatric conditions - and the use of prescribed treatments/medications
- Participates in Mental Health provider call rotation as delegated by the CBOC Mental Health Medical Director
- Provides comprehensive guideline directed evidence-based care to patients with a wide variety of mental health Prescribes individualized pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for treatment of cardiac diseases and related medical problems for the promotion of quality of life - wellness - and improved outcomes as demonstrated by reduction of hospitalizations and/or urgent care visits
- Educate patient - significant others and affiliated medical center staff on health care issues (i.e
- medications - diet - lifestyle changes and follow up)
- Facilitate the completion of informed consents prior to procedures Mentors to APP and Nursing students - Acts as consultant and resource to other departments within and outside the medical center regarding mental health - and behavioral issues/concerns

- Work Schedule: The tour of duty for this position is typically Monday - Friday - 8am - 4:30pm
